5 REASONS PEOPLE DON’T GET THEIR HEARING TESTED AND WHY THEY SHOULD

Maybe you know someone who should get their hearing checked, but getting them to make an appointment can be a difficult task for different reasons. Here are five reasons why people don’t get their hearing tested. You may have heard some of these before!

1.       I’m too Young to Get My Hearing Tested

Although hearing loss is often synonymous with aging, hearing loss can also be hereditary or brought on by damage to the ear. If you suspect you may have hearing loss, don’t let your age prevent you from getting your hearing tested. Every Canadian should have at least one baseline hearing test in their adulthood.  Regular monitoring should begin at age 60.

2.       I Can Hear Just Fine

Early signs of hearing loss can often be compensated by turning up the volume, leaning in to hear a conversation or asking someone to repeat themselves. These easy solutions can make it easy to dismiss the possibility that you have a hearing issue. You may think people are just speaking too softly or your environment is just too noisy, but if others are noticing your hearing impairment, or if those around you don’t respond to noise the same way you do, you should consider getting your hearing checked.

3.       I’m Embarrassed

Hearing loss is often associated with being old, and a lot of people shy away from this description. Some people are worried about the social stigma linked to hearing aids if they realize they have to wear them. However, asking others to repeat themselves constantly can be embarrassing as well, and there are different styles of hearing aids that are nearly impossible to notice!

4.       I Don’t Know Where to Begin. Do I need a Doctor Referral?

You can book an appointment through our website under “Request an Appointment.” You do not need a doctor referral to take a hearing test.

5.       I Can’t Afford Hearing Aids

Although hearing aids can be expensive, many hearing aid providers have payment plans that can help relieve your financial concerns, and the gift of hearing well again is truly life changing!

Why Should You Get Your Hearing Checked?

Hearing loss has been linked to social isolation, depression and other conditions. Addressing your hearing loss can help to address other concerns in your life that you never thought were connected to hearing loss. The hearing test is free, and for every hearing test that is taken, the sponsors of the National Campaign for Better Hearing will donate $4.00 towards the purchase of brand new hearing aids for those who cannot afford them. By getting your hearing tested, not only are you taking charge of your hearing health, you are also giving back to the Canadian community. Happy hearing!
