Think about your hearing this summer

Summer is the perfect time for music festivals, vacations and outdoor frolicking. You’ll want to make sure your hearing doesn’t suffer from all the fun you’re having! Here are five tips to maintain healthy hearing this summer.

We have some timely tips for you!

    1. Protect your ears at festivals and music concertsAre you heading to an open-air concert? Perhaps your children or grandchildren are. If it will be loud, it’s important to be aware of the dangers of hearing damage. In open-air settings where the atmosphere is more open than an indoor environment, people often forget to be aware of the dangers of loud noise.Remember this: If you have to shout to make yourself heard, your hearing is under strain. Consider wearing hearing protection such as disposable earplugs, and take regular breaks from the loud environment. Also, remember to wipe down your ear plugs after each use to prevent infections caused by outside germs.
    2. Prepare for the change in air pressure when you fly off on holidayIn most cases, the change in air pressure when you’re in a plane do not pose a health issue, but it can still be uncomfortable. Chewing some gum while you’re soaring in the sky can help relieve the pressure you feel in your ears.
    3. Prevent swimmer’s earSwimmer’s ear is an infection of the outer ear canal that is often caused by water trapped in your ear after swimming. After swimming, tilt and shake your head to drain the water out of your ear.
    4. Wear hearing protection during your summer cleaningSummer is a great opportunity to tackle your cleaning to-do list, but some things such as vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers and power tools can generate enough noise to damage your ears. Be sure to wear ear protection even when you’re working around the house.

No matter what you choose to do this summer, keep your hearing health at the forefront of your mind using these four summertime tips. Happy hearing!
